Coach Stevens started playing volleyball in 1981 and began coaching in 1987. He attended Midwood High School, in Brooklyn NY and played for four years on the Varsity Soccer Team and captained them his senior year. He also was a member of the swim team for four years and was a two year captain. His spring season was occupied with various sports until his senior year in high school when New York’s PSAL started boy’s volleyball citywide as an interscholastic sport in 1987.
Coach Stevens played as an outside hitter and garnered team MVP as the team advanced to the city quarter finals before losing to eventual finalist, Bronx High School of Science. His senior season he was awarded MVP for both boy’s soccer and volleyball. He was awarded two other prestigious awards his senior season; the “Leonard Singer Achievement Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence” and the inaugural “Anthony Sanchez Memorial Award”; recognizing his contributions to Social Studies and Athletics, which commemorated the Athletic Director who passed away earlier that year.
Coach Stevens attended St. Bonaventure University and worked as an undergraduate assistant for the women’s volleyball team for 3 years, from 1987-1989. After leaving St. Bonaventure, he worked as an assistant swim coach at the Westfield YMCA from 1990-1996. During that time, he also held the position of Head Diving Coach and Assistant Aquatic Director. He also volunteered his time helping the Westfield High School girl’s volleyball team, for which his sister was a member.
Coach Stevens went back to school and graduated from Kean University with a B.A. in Physical Education and Health Education. He coached volleyball at Cranford High School for one year, taking them to the Union County Semifinals and finished with a 17-5 record in 1995. He started teaching at Elizabeth High School in 1997 and took over the volleyball program the following year. His first year as Head Coach, the team qualified for States and made it to the 2nd round. He also coached track and field, specializing in the Pole Vault. He then took a teaching job at Linden High School in 2001 and started their volleyball program in 2002. While at Linden he was also the head coach for the Swim Team and Boys Tennis Team. In the spring of 2005, he took over the boy’s volleyball job at Bloomfield High School and started teaching there the following fall, whereupon he took over the girls program as well. In his second season with the boys, the team captured the 2006 Essex County Boy’s Volleyball Championship and made it to the North Jersey Sectional quarterfinals. The team finished the year ranked 12th in the state of New Jersey. He has since led the boy’s team to 4 more County Championships in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2016. Coach Stevens was selected as the Star Ledger Boys Volleyball “Coach of the Year” in 2008.
Coach Stevens is married to Katarzyna (Kasia to her friends, and a volleyball player of course). They have a daughter, Leah and a son, Aleksander.
