When Katie Seamon, 23, of Rahway was chosen to compete on this year’s season of “The Amazing Race,” she knew exactly where to train: her parents’ house on Russell Avenue.

Seamon, who works in New York, lives with her parents, who happen to be huge fans of the reality game show. They developed a special training regimen to get her ready for the CBS show in which pairs of contestants travel the globe solving puzzles.

“We had a ‘war room’ so I could practice and study things. (My parents) would set up obstacles for me and challenges,” Seamon said last week. “Maps, getting used to reading maps, fake challenges.”

“A table was covered with pennies, and I had to find 10 pennies from the 1970s or decipher some code,” Seamon said.

Seamon played soccer in elementary school and recreation league volleyball before going to Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains. She played there and at Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club in Westfield and in college at Central Connecticut State University. Seamon transferred to Rutgers and later tended bar at The Waiting Room in downtown Rahway.

She isn’t the only accomplished athlete in her family. Her brother Michael is a professional soccer player with the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer.

Now, she works as a property manager for The Plaza, a historic New York hotel, and coaches at Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club.

She and Johnson aren’t the only New Jerseyans on the show, which will air Sunday nights this fall: Jonathan Schwartz, 22, of Cranford competed as well.

Seamon and her Amazing Race partner have played beach volleyball together for about five years and hoped their teamwork and physical conditioning would help them win the show’s $1 million prize.

“We were beach volleyball partners, and for me I had that coaching aspect, a very analytical side of it,” Seamon said last week. “I thought I would be very good at making decisions and the team side of it.”

Competitors on the Amazing Race can’t reveal much about the details of the competition, but Seamon said that she and Johnson were best friends before the competition and still are after it.
