John Kessel's Bio:

From 1990 John has been working for the National Governing Body of the sport, USA Volleyball. He is currently the Director of Beach Volleyball, Education and Grassroots Programs. 
In 1995, Volleyball magazine named him as one of the 50 most important people in the sport of volleyball in the first 100 years. 
He has been coaching since 1971 at the collegiate level or above, including National Women's Open titles in 1986 & 1987. From 1982 to 1990 he was Director and Coaches' Coach of the Albuquerque Junior Olympic Volleyball Program. 
A sought after international lecturer, in the past 5 years he has coached in Australia, China, England, Italy, Japan, Canada, Guatemala, Greece, Jamaica, New Zealand, Holland, Portugal, Belize, Ireland, Tonga, Belgium, and El Salvador, as well as every state in the United States. For a month in the summer of of 1991, he was one of the four featured speakers at the first International Youth Volleyball Coaches Symposium in Olympia, Greece, attended by over 50 nations, and repeated as main lecturer in the FIVB Volleyball in the Schools Symposium in Quebec City, Canada in 1995. 
He is currently one of 8 members of the International Volleyball Federation's Technical Commission, serving as Secretary of that commission and a Level IV instructor. 
From 1987 to 1991 he was the tournament director of the US Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. As a player he has participated in 15 USVBA National Open Championships, as recently as 1993 in Memphis, and is a 7 time Regional Champion. He has also played "professionally" with the Denver Comets in the old International Volleyball Association, and a year in Italy for the Aleassandria Volleyball Club. He was on staff for both the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, and will also be assisting in 1996 in Atlanta. In 1993, he started on the Colorado team that took the bronze medal in the Masters National Championships. 
His main goal is to help make coaches more efficient, positive and creative, no matter what the level - 7 year olds in elementary school program or National team players and program. He challenges old ways of thinking and help coaches create what they need, while having fun in the process. He has been very active in the past few years in getting the internet to be the tool of communication for all the volleyball leaders from the FIVB level to those in the grassroots. 
He sponsors Lang Ping, from the Chinese Women's Volleyball team, 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, 1981-85 World Champion and 3 times All-World Player, and current China Women's Olympic Team coach. John has a BA in Biology and Economics received from The Colorado College in 1974. John is divorced, and has a son Cody, born in 1991 and a daughter McKenzie, born in 1993.
