AVVC 16 Red traveled to Lancaster, PA this past weekend to compete in the annual MLK Kickoff Classic.  The team started their weekend off with Saturday pool play and a strong performance with 2-0 wins over National 16-1 and NVVA 16 Black.  The last match of the day was versus Synergy 16 Orange (who eventually won the 1st Place in Gold).  The girls were fighting back and fourth point after point, and ended up losing where they were set up to compete for a Gold or Silver bracket weekend.
Sunday was a great start as well, where the girls managed to get off to another strong 4-0 start.  With beating Yorktowne 16 Gold and a familiar Essex 16 Black, they only had one more team to take care of. With little known about the eventual opponent CAVA 15 Lime, the team knew that they too were a team that was looking to play for championship status.  The match of the day was definitely on display at the venue where a 3 set thriller ended up with a 14-16 loss!  Despite the loss, our girls consistency was the winner overall.  Due to the fact that 3 teams were 2-1 match play, the team managed to win in point differential to give us the #1 seed going into a sudden death mini set.  The girls played hard but lost but a bigger picture was in view: a gold bracket run in the Open Division.
The last day, the girls started their playoff run at 8am and beat Vienna Elite 16 2-0.  Moving on to the quarterfinals versus Evolution 16 "NFINITY", the girls had a slow start and lost their first set with a last minute comeback at 18-25.  The team knew they were going to make some adjustments as well as put a better foot forward and they sure did.  Playing a set that had "highlight reel" worthy performance all over, EVOLUTION won 23-25.
The girls look forward to traveling this weekend to Hampton Roads, VA and we would like to thank all our parents, chaperones, and fans for helping out this weekend!
