Team Hydra Rocks!

After weathering New Jersey’s first snowfall of the new year, Team Hydra trekked all the way to College of New Rochelle for a 14s tournament on Saturday.  We began our tournament playing LHVA bright and early at 9am.  Before the game, the girls were a little timid of playing against girls that were older and bigger.  They showed no mercy in the first match and beat LHVA 25-15 and 26-24.   With a little confidence under our belts, the girls were ready to prove that age was just a number.

We had one game off in order to prepare ourselves for 14 DIGS, which was the first team in our pool.  Once our break was over the girls were on the court ready to take on their next opponent.  They shook DIGS hands’ before the game, and then it was our time to shine.  In the first game the girls played absolutely phenomenal.   Not only were the girls serving aces left and right, they were passing perfectly, setting stellar, and hitting outstanding!  The girls played so well together, nothing could stop them.  We beat DIGS 25-13.  Thanks to our parents, we had quite the fun cheering section too!  We started off the second game against DIGS slowly.  We found ourselves falling behind 13-21.  After a brief timeout, the girls settled down and were able to play their game.  Once again thanks to their terrific serving and scrappy defensive they made sure NO ball was hitting their court.  We ended up losing 23-25, but it was a TERRIFIC effort on our behalf.  We never gave up!

Our third game in pool play we played NYC 14s.  We had watched them play previously and we knew it was going to be a great game.  They were a very scrappy team, and TEAM HYDRA was playing incredible defense.  We beat NYC in both games 25-17 and 20-20.  The girls were on a roll!  They now knew that no one or nothing could stop them, even if they were playing up a division.

Our last game in pool play we played Oxygen.   Since our court was running very behind, and the first court was done early… we switched courts to play Oxygen.  The first game we won soundly.  The second game we ended up losing.  The good thing was that even though we lost we made it to playoffs being SECOND in our pool!  We were all so excited.

The girls faced Alpha Gamma, who was first in their pool, for the first round of playoffs.  The girls lost both games, but overall I think we blew everyone’s expectations out of the water.  We played so well together, and it was a joint effort.  All the girls contributed to our success!  Numerous coaches and parents came up to Bob Baker as well as myself and Coach Baker, telling us how awesome our girls played!  (We think they are alright too?)

GO TEAM HYDRA!!!!
