Julie Monroy’s hard-hitting, aggressive style and stellar service game have produced a team-leading 116 kills, 49 digs and 48 service points in sparking Union Catholic, No. 13 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, to a 7-2 start.

After opening its season with seven straight victories, the Scotch Plains school’s perfect record was snapped when it fell in its two most recent meetings. On Thursday it was defeated by No. 2 Livingston, 2-1, before falling short to No. 1 Immaculate Heart Academy, 2-1, on Friday.

Against Immaculate Heart, arguably the toughest competitor Union Catholic has faced this season, the team took it to three sets behind Monroy, its 5-7 senior outside hitter.
